International Archives Week 2021
The National Archives and Records Service of South Africa in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Archives will host the 2021 Annual National Archives Awareness Week from 09 -11 June 2021 in KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Archives.
A decision was taken by the International Council on Archives (ICA) that countries should celebrate Archives Week annually in their respective countries. The Archives Week promotes the importance of good record keeping practices and allows members of the public access to archival buildings so as to understand archival functions and services. This celebration of the Annual Archives Week is intended to promote the use of the archives whereby individuals become exposed to how research is conducted at the archives, what services are offered, processes needed to access classified information held by archival institutions, and how exhibitions are done using archival collections.
The theme for this year’s Archives Week is Archives as Memory Institutions, Protecting the Integrity of Organisations through Providing Mechanisms for Good Governance, Legal Certainty and Rights with the following sub-themes:
- Empowering Archives
- Records Management in the Age of Technology
- Governance Memorialisation
- Archival Education in the modern day
- Laws governing Archiving, Records Management and Memory Work
The Deputy Minister of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the MEC responsible for Archives in KwaZulu-Natal will officiate at the opening event on 9 June 2021. Annually, the 9th of June is celebrated as the International Archives Day.
The National Archives and Records Service of South Africa in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Archives are also planning to have speakers from both the International Council on Archives (ICA) and Eastern and Southern Branch of the International Council on Archives (ESARBICA) as guest speakers or have their messages of support for the Annual Archives Week.
Generally, during the Archives Week, exhibitions are mounted, learners are informed on available career options, members of the communities and learners are allowed to go behind the scenes (strongrooms) of the archives where usually access is restricted. However, this year this is not going to be possible as a result of the COVID-19 regulations and restrictions.
This year’s annual archives week will be a hybrid one with guests, schools and other participants joining physically at the Mhlathuze Civic Centre (STRICTLY BY INVITATION ONLY) and others joining virtually through TEAMS, DSAC Facebook, KZN DAC Facebook, DSAC YouTube and/or KZNDAC YouTube channels.
Join us to learn more about Archives and to also share your experiences of using archival material/collections.
Looking forward to virtually seeing you.
