Pietermaritzburg Nokulunga Gumede, a five year old, died after being run over by a police casspir in Mpophomeni township on 21 March 1990 during an outbreak of political violence. As Nokulunga belonged to neither warring faction, the memorial serves as a unifying symbol transcending the political divides of the time in KwaZulu-Natal.
