Pietermaritzburg Dr. Mabel Palmer (nee Atkinson), born 1877, was an economist, educationalist and protagonist of women's rights. She was also an executive member of the Fabian Society, London. From 1930 to 1955 she was the organizer of the Non-European Section of the University of Natal, Durban. In 1948 Natal University awarded her a PhD honoris causa. She died in 1957.
