Jane Elizabeth Waterston (1843-1932), missionary of the Free Church of Scotland, medical doctor. She was the first woman superintendent of Lovedale girls' school, 1867-1873. In 1873 she went to Europe to study medicine and qualified in Ireland in 1879. Waterston left Lovedale to practise in Cape Town in 1883. In 1925 the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland awarded her a fellowship and in 1929 the University of Cape Town conferred on her honorary LLD.
