Pietermaritzburg Established in 1914 under Hertzog, the National Party came to power under Dr. DF Malan in 1948. During its long regime apartheid laws were legalised and effected. Increasing resistance, mass action, disinvestment and economic recession led to the release in 1990 of Nelson Mandela of the ANC by FW de Klerk. The release of political prisoners and the repeal of apartheid legislation followed. As a result of negotiations between political parties and movements the first fully democratic elections in South Africa were scheduled for April 1994.
