HIGHER EDUCATION TODAY - MATHEMATICS IN AFRICA Guests: Professor Barry Green, Chief Research and Academic Officer, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, Computer Science Lecturer, University of Lagos Host: Steven Roy Goodman Original Air Date: 1 September 2015 On this episode of Higher Education Today, Steven has a conversation with Barry Green about AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences), an institute in Africa teaching mathematical science. The other guest is Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, a computer science lecturer, who was looking for a research topic for her PhD. AIMS programmes include modelling of robots but also general programmes geared towards mathematical thinking. It does this with the talented youth in Africa at their disposal by moulding them into mathematical thinkers. To get into AIMS you need to have a mathematical background and go through their rigorous screening process. Mathematical science is used in our daily lives and that is why AIMS is trying to produce the best students and the best teachers. So far AIMS has trained over 1000 teachers in South Africa.
