HIGHER EDUCATION TODAY - MICROCREDENTIALS Guests: Nadia Starr, Chief Executive Officer, South African Qualifications Authority; James Keevy, Chief Executive Officer, JET Education Services; and Trudi van Wyk, Chief Director, Department of Higher Education and Training Host: Steven Roy Goodman Original Air Date: 18 September 2023 On this episode of Higher Education Today, Steven has a conversation about microcredentials and their validity. At the beginning of the segment it was set out that there is no clear definition of what a microcredential is, but there are many short courses happening at the university level. The recognition of microcredentials is important, but learning can happen anywhere and people can gain skills anywhere. Should microcredentials be recognised even if not taught in a formal way or by a certified professional? The conversation leads to hopeful world where if there wasn’t a lack of infrastructure as one of the main roadblocks, there would be a system where an employer could see the CV of an applicant with their credentials, skills gained, and current competencies. This would serve both as a recognition of learning and a sort of verification. In the end, the guests come to somewhat of an agreement that there needs to be some regulation and flexibility in the certification of acquiring a skill and on the focus on the practicality of the training.
