Tall plant on right - Aloe ferox. From Charles J Chamberlain. Encephalartos Latifrons, at Trappes Valley, South Africa. Most botanists have seen or, at least, heard of the row of Encephalartos (Bread Palms) in the front of the Richardson home at Trappes Valley, near Grahamstown, South Africa. I visited the place in February, 1912, and studied the Cycads of the vicinity, E Latifrons growing in the open and E Altensteinii growing in the bush. In front of the house were three fine specimens of E Altensteinii and two of E Latifrons. Mrs. Richardson said her husband had set them out 46 years before, when she came to the place as a bride. She guessed the the E Altensteinii, which produced leaves every year, had grown six inches, but that the E Latifrons, which did not produce leaves often, did not seem to have grown any.
