Gysbert Reitz Hofmeyr, 1871-1942 was the son of Rev. Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr and his wife, Christina van Zyl. Educated at Riversdale school and at Victoria College, Stellenbosch, he entered the Cape civil service in 1890. In 1893 he passed the Civil Service Law Examination. Between 1920 and 1926, he served as the first civil Administrator of SWA. After 1926 he joined the South African Party and tried to promote a united white South Africa.
